The Parts of The Sentence
The boy plays football. The cow is a useful animal.
উপরের প্রথম Sentence-টিতে The boy সম্পর্কে বলা হচ্ছে। দ্বিতীয় Sentence-এ The cow সম্পর্কে কিছু বলা হচ্ছে। উপরের Sentence দু'টি থেকে দেখা যায় প্রতিটিকে উদ্দেশ্য করে কিছু বলা হয়।
অতএব, কোন Sentence-এ যাকে (ব্যক্তি, প্রাণী, বন্ধু) উদ্দেশ্য করে কিছু বলা হয় তাকে Subject বলে।
আবার উপরের প্রথম Sentence-এ the boy সম্পর্ক যা বলা হয়েছে তা হলো 'plays football এবং দ্বিতীয় Sentence-এ the cow সম্পর্কে যা বলা হয়েছে তা হল 'is a useful animal'. এভাবে প্রতিটি Sentence-এ Subject সম্পর্কে কিছু বলা হয়ে থাকে।
অতএব Subject সম্পর্কে যা কিছু বলা হয় তাকে Predicate বলে।
উপরের Sentence দু'টিতে The boy এবং The cow যথাক্রমে Subject এবং plays football is a useful animal—Predicate. সুতরাং একটি Sentence-এ দুটি অংশ থাকে। একটি Subject এবং অপরটি Predicate. নিচের কয়েকটি Sentence-এ Subject এবং Predicate অংশের ভাগ করে দেখানো হলো।

কোন Sentence-এর Subject part সাধারণতঃ Noun বা Noun equivalent হয় এবং Predicate Part-এ একটি Verb থাকে। তবে বড় Sentence-এ তাদের সঙ্গে Adjunct যুক্ত হয়ে থাকে ।
(1) Imperative Sentence- Subject (you) Do the work. : Sentence-এর শুরুতে Subject বসে। তবে অনেক সময় Prediate-এর পরেও Subject বসতে পারে। যেমনঃ Down went the Titanic.

B. Match the subject with the correct predicate.
